POR/PARA

The prepositions "por" and "para" look quite difficult the first time we study them. We discover that they have different equivalents in English.

Before starting to see which these differences are, let´s have a look at some sentences:

This book is for you. Este libro es para tí.
To go to the hospital, you need to take the bus. Para ir al hospital, necesitas coger el autobús.
Will you come home for my birthday? ¿Vendrás a casa por mi cumpleaños?
I like walking in  the street. Me gusta pasear por la calle.
In the evening I always  visit my mother. Por la tarde visito siempre a mi madre

Let´s try now to understand the difference between "por" and "para"

Lo he hecho para ella. I have done-made it for her (to give it to her, for example a painting, clean the dishes...)
Lo hago todo por ella. I  do anything for her (for example, work hard, earn money, etc. In a word, for her welfare, happiness, etc.)

Me voy para la montaña (I am going  to the mountain, same as me voy a la montaña)
Me voy por la montaña (I am  going through the mountain) Walking through the mountain.

Vamos para el  pueblo (we are going to the village) Same as "vamos al pueblo". Same meaning.
Vamos por el pueblo (we are walking through the village, among its streets, people. etc)

Para demostrar que es cierto..... (to show or proove that it is true.....)
Por demostrar que es cierto, te regalo un reloj (Because you prooved it to be true, I am giving you a watch)

Le llamaron para hablar del tema. (They called him to speak about the issue)
Le llamaron por hablar del tema . (They called him for having spoken about the issue)

Try to guess the correct preposion. ¿Por or Para?

But first.... a little hint: "Para" has a sense of movement towards the outside. Salgo para comer un poco.
While "por" has many times a sense of contrary movemet, it goes to a cause, to the inside. Por haber sido bueno, te regalo un caramelo (Because you were good, something happened before and therefore there is an action. Of course, it can also be the equivalent for "through" and some other preposition.  As for "para" there is always a sense of doing something without a cause, this is for you, para tí, and not because you did something before that makes want to give you something. It´s because I want to, because I feel like doing it, from feelings, etc.)
The best example could be: Esto es para tí por haber sido bueno (this is for you for having been so good)

Ejercicio : Ser y Estar

After having seen the differences bewteen "SER" and "ESTAR", it will still be difficult at times to guess which one goes with a sentence and which one to another.
Let´s practice a little with the following excercise.

But before, let´s see again the present tense of SER and ESTAR

SER - ESTAR

Yo soy - estoy
Tú eres - estás
Usted es - está
El es - está
Ella es - está
Nosotros/as somos - estamos
Vosotros/as sóis - estáis
Ustedes son - están
Ellos/as - están

Fill in the blank spaces with the suitable verb. Is it SER or ESTAR? Try to guess:

1. ...... muy cansado, no me encuentro bien
2. Alicia ..... una buena chica. Siempre ayuda a los demás
3. Cuando ..... cansado de estudiar, veo la televisión
4. Los profesores ------ de huelga

SER/ESTAR Part II

Use of verb ESTAR

-We use it when we want to express a certain situation in space or time, circumstances, states, intentions, the moment when something takes place, etc. It's meaning has to do with "permanent state of being", "occupiying a place", "living in some place", "stay at some place", etc. Let's see some examples:

¿Dónde es? ........ Where does it take place?

¿Dónde está?...... What kind of space does it use or employ?

Being able  to make the difference between these two examples is essential in order to understand the subtilities of SER and ESTAR.

What can we say using the ver ESTAR?

-We can ask for a place. ¿Dónde está mi primo? ¿Dónde vive María? ¿Dónde está mi libro?

-We can situate people, things and-or places giving them a determinded space.

El libro está encima de la mesa. María está en el colegio. Mi hermano está en casa de Angel. El hospital está en Barcelona

-We can indicate someone or something´s presence or abscence:

Antonio está aquí, en su habitación. No está, está en el cine. Mis libros no están aquí, ¿dónde están, entonces? ¿Están en casa de Alba...??

- We can indicate the position of someone or something:

Estoy de pie desde las siete de la mañana.

-We can also indicate an attitude towards something or someone:

Estoy de acuerdo con lo que dices. Estoy acuerdo con Antonio

-Activity:

Carlos está de viaje de negocios. María está de gira (tour) por América

-Attitude:

Antonio está triste. María está de mal humor. Los niños están alegres hoy.

-State of health:

El profesor está enfermo. La niña está sana.

-Opinion:

La comida está buena. Attention, if I say "la comida es buena" the sense is more "good for the health" while "la comida está buena" means "good for the taste, delicious".

-Something that is bound to happen:

Está al venir, está al caer (bound to happen) Las Navidades están al caer.

-An action´s result:

El libro está escrito. El cuadro está pintado con colores diversos.

-Something´s price:

¿A cómo está el arroz hoy? Attention, if we say ¿Cuánto es? meaning how much is it? is not the same than if we say ¿a cómo está....? meaning "how much does THIS cost, what is its price, not when we ask "how much is it" after taking some goods. ¿A cómo está el arroz hoy? is a question we make even if we don´t take rice (in this example) , it´s just an enquiry to have some information.

-To say the  date:

¿A cuánto estamos hoy? (¿Qué día es hoy?)

Let´s understand now the differences using common sentences:

José es un preocupado (personality) José está preocupado (about something)

José es un despistado (he is always this way) José está despistado (right now)

María es una mujer muy serena ( permanent) María está serena (at this moment)

Carlos es muy guapo (permanent) Carlos está muy guapo (by the way he is dressing)

Esteban es un hombre muy seguro de sí mismo (personality) Esteban está seguro (about someone or something)

La calle es estrecha (built this way) La calle está estrecha (new elements making it  difficult to pass)

El campo es verde (permanently or almost) El campo está verde (because it rained, for example)

La niña es estudiosa (as always) La niña está estudiosa (today)

Use of verb SER

-When we want to express the "existence" of something or someone.

Soy María
¿Quíen es aquél señor?

-When we want to express the origin or nationality of a person:

Soy de los Estados Unidos
Este jarro es de Japón
Soy noruego

-When we want to express the physical and moral qualities of someone or something:

Es doctor
María es muy guapa
Alejandro es gordo
La iglesia es muy grande
Omar es musulmán

-When we want to express someone´s way of being:

Ana es simpática
Carlos no es agradable

-When we want to ask or give a definition of something or someone:

¿Cómo es tu profesor?
Esto es un libro
Aquello es una casa
Federico es mi amor
Federico es un enamorado de los viajes exóticos
(attention: Federico está enamorado)

-When we want to judge something:
Es cierto
Es verdad
No es una buena idea

-When we ask for the price of something:
¿Cuánto es?
¿Cuánto vale?

-When we ask or give the time:
¿Qué hora es? Es la una de la tarde. Son las dos y media

-When we speak about dates:
¿Qué día fué ayer? Ayer fué martes.
¿Qué día es hoy? Hoy es miércoles

-When we speak about seasons:
Es primavera

-When we speak about the destiny of something or an action (possesion):
Esta rosa es para tí
Estos discos compactos son para vosotros.

-When we speak about the place where something takes place:

¿Dónde será la fiesta? En casa de Maite

-When we speak about time:

Es de noche ahora.
Era de día cuando Carlos vino a mi casa.

-When we speak about the material of something:
La puerta es de madera
El vaso es de cristal
La llave es de hierro

NOTE:
¿Dónde es? Where is it? Es en París, es en Barcelona
¿Dónde  está? What place is it? Está en París, está en Barcelona

¿Dónde es la fiesta? En casa de Carlos
¿Donde está la casa de Carlos? En Barcelona

NEXT TIME : VERBO ESTAR AND HOW TO USE IT.

To go to (Ir a) /To come from (Venir de)

We are going to see how these prepositions (a, de) work  in this case.

"To go to" becomes in Spanish "ir a"
"To come from" becomes in Spanish "venir de"

ir= to go
venir= to come

Now let's see how we build sentences using these verbs and prepositions:

(Yo) voy a Madrid = I am going to Madrid
(El) va a la escuela = He is going to the school.

(Ella) viene de Madrid = She comes from Madrid
(Nosotros)  venimos de la escuela = we come from the school

VERY IMPORTANT REMARK:

a la escuela (when the noun is feminine, in this case "escuela")
al colegio (college) (when the noun is masculine. Remark this "al" : It is a contraction of  "a + el".  Carlos va a el colegio becomes "Carlos va al
colegio.

The same occurs with "del". It is a contraction of "de + el". Carmen viene de el banco becomes "Carmen viene del banco."

We use these elements contracted when they come before an article and a noun: yo voy a EL COLEGIO. We say then : Yo voy AL COLEGIO.

PRACTICE

feminine nouns with article: a la (to)
masculine nouns with article: al (to)

feminine nouns with article: de la (from)
masculine nouns with article: del (from)

Some examples:

Hoy Carlos va al banco (to the bank) Banco is a masculine noun.

Hoy Carlos va a la tienda (to the shop). Tienda is a feminine noun.

Carlos viene ahora del banco.
Carlos va ahora al banco.

If we don´t use any article, we will not use "al" or "del".

Examples:  María va a Barcelona . Antonio va a trabajar (to work) but Antonio va al trabajo (to his work or place of work) Trabajo is a masculine noun, therefore we use "al" and "del". Antonio viene del trabajo.

Yo voy a Barcelona. But: Yo voy a la ciudad de Barcelona. El va al río (to the river, masculine noun in Spanish) El va al Duero (al río Duero).

Try to fill in the following blank spaces: de, de la , del, de las, de los a, a la, al, a las, a los

Rosa viene ........ estudio de televisión. Estudio: masculine noun
Miguel va ....... campo de fútbol. Campo: masculine noun
Mario va ....... estudiar . Estudiar: Verb, first declination

Los profesores vienen .......... conferencia. Conferencia: feminine noun
Los alumnos van ....... viajar. Viajar: Verb, first declination
Mañana nosotros iremos ........ río Duero de excursión. Río: masculine noun.
Belén va ....... bancos para cambiar euros. Bancos: masculine noun, plural.
Los niños vienen ...... tiendas. Tiendas: feminine noun, plural.

USO DE LOS ADJETIVOS/USE OF ADJECTIVES

In Spanish language, the adjectives must be in accordance with the noun in gender and number. Exceptions will be with those adjectives that are invariable (either used with masculine and / or feminine nouns)

Here we are going to see some examples regarding variable and invariable adjectives.

Let's take the following nouns:

Hombre , m.(man)

Mujer, f. (woman)

Niño, m. (child, little boy)

Niña, f. (child, little girl)

Chico, m. (boy)

Chica, f. (girl)

Perro, m. (male dog)

Gata, f. (female cat)

pájaro, m. (bird)

caracol, m. (snail)

And we will take the following adjectives:

guapo (m.) - guapa (f.)  (handsome, pretty, beautiful. Guapo applies to people, not to animals and or objects.)

bonito (m.) - bonita (f.) (pretty, beautiful. Applies to animals, objects. Attention: bonitA is used as well to designate a beautiful girl. We will see the examples.

inteligente (m.,f.) (intelligent, invariable)

simpático (m.) simpática (f.) (nice, charming)

antipático (m.) antipática (f.) (disagreeable)

joven (m.f.) (young, invariable)

viejo (m.), vieja (f.) (old)

rápido (m.), rápida (f.) (quick, speedy)

lento (m.), lenta (f.) (slow)

alto (m.), alta (f.) (tall)

bajo (m.), baja (f.) (short)

agradable (m.f.) (pleasant)

And we will use them with the preceeding nouns (note the concordance in gender and number)

Un niño guapo, Una niña guapa

Unos pájaros  rápidos, un caracol  lento

Una mujer inteligente, un chico  inteligente

Una niña baja, unos hombres bajos

Un perro viejo, una mujer muy vieja (very old)

Un gato bonito, un perro bonito (not guapo)

pretty old . Bastante viejo(s). Bastante vieja(s)
